On the rocky path to sobriety after a life-changing accident, John Callahan discovers the healing power of art, willing his injured hands into drawing hilarious, often controversial cartoons, which bring him a new lease on life. – From IMDB
Directed by: Gus Van Sant
Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, Jonah Hill
44 seconds into the trailer for Gus Van Sant’s latest I know I like two things: Rooney Mara’s haircut and “Isolation” by John Lennon. I am also impressed at how funny it is when John Callahan (Joaquin Phoenix) catapults out of his wheelchair, and into the road.
Now I feel a little bad…
In all seriousness I’m glad to see that Van Sant appears to have gotten back to doing what he does best: making films that are not horrible. 2015’s The Sea of Trees garnered a whopping 23% percent on Metacritic. With numbers like that the Academy lets you sit next to Nick Cage at the Oscars.
Luckily for this film, the reviews are looking okay-ish. Here’s hoping!
